Shanty. Sea shanty. Chanty. A cappella. Maritime music. Performed by The Tims Vocal Band known as The Tims. Music and lyrics are traditional. Arranged by Tim Hall. Recorded, mixed and mastered at WXSLEUTH Studios, Hummelstown, Pennsylvania. I first heard this song performed by a folk artist at a traditional music festival in St. John's, Newfoundland in 1985. It stuck with me all these years like and ear worm. I am excited to bring my arrangement of this traditional shanty to you 40 years later. This shanty commemorates General Zachary Taylor, victor over General Santa Ana at Molina del Ray in 1847and 12th President of the United States. In the mid-1800s, General Taylor’s exploits were referenced in numerous shanties. In this shanty, General Taylor is conflated with the mythical, larger-than-life hero of the sea, Alred Bulltop Stormalong ("Old Stormy"). Stormy is a legendary maritime folk hero and the subject of numerous tall tales that originated in Massachusetts. The name of Stormalong appears in sea shanties traced to the 1830s and ‘40s, first published in Stan Hugill’s connection, Sea Shanties of the Seven Seas. His character was a colossal man renowned for extraordinary strength, size and bravery. His adventures include battles against pirates and sea monsters. He had a lifelong rivalry with a Kraken, a huge sea monster from Norse mythology. In this shanty, General Taylor is afforded the burial honors usually reserved for Stormalong. In the images illustrating this shanty, I have reimaged the fused character, General “Stormy” Taylor as a mythical man achieving incredible feats on land as a military general who also battled alligators and wrestled might bears with his bare hands. He is also a legendary sea captain who fights sea monsters and surfs for fun on the back of lassoed whales. The features of my character are reminiscent of the real-life Zachary Taylor as well as historical illustrations of Stormalong.
