In 1887 the south campus of Rancho Los Amigos, located in Downey, was known as the Los Angeles County Poor Farm. The facility was created to house the poor and physically disabled that were released from the nearby county hospital. The facility was located on 540 acres. At it’s peak it housed almost 3000 patients. The residents were provided with a place to stay and an opportunity to work on the farm. The facility produced both food for the residents and the community. The 1940s, when polio epidemic began, the hospital was restructured to provide long-term care for polio patients. By the late 1950s much of the facility closed down and most of the property was divided and sold. Rancho Los Amigos north campus currently operates as a modern hospital and is a world-renowned rehabilitation center. The location of the farm property now sits abandoned and the old structures are in the process of being demolished.
