Second Commandment: No Graven Images // Commandments in the 21st Century

We are taking a closer look at the 2nd commandment, found in Exodus 20:4–6: “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.” In this commandment, the Lord makes it clear that there is a punishment for idol worship, worship of graven statues of gold, silver, etc., but also of living things in this world. In Deuteronomy 7:25, He gave direct instructions to the children of Israel as to what should be done with pagan items: “The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the Lord thy God.” God is longsuffering, not desiring that any should perish. 1 John 1:9 promises, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” God is long-suffering. He gives us opportunity after opportunity to repent and turn to him.
