Peter Mortensen, MD, Larry Benowitz, PhD, and Takaaki Kuwajima, PhD, speak about current updates in optic nerve regeneration research. Dr. Peter Mortensen completed his ophthalmology residency in 2020 at UPMC. He then completed a neuro-ophthalmology fellowship at Houston Methodist Hospital under the direction of Dr. Andrew Lee in 2021. He worked at Houston Methodist Hospital until earlier this year as a full-time neuro-ophthalmologist and recently joined UPMC as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology in May 2025. Dr. Larry Benowitz, formerly Professor of Neurosurgery and Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School and Neurosurgical Innovation and Research Professor at Boston Children’s Hospital, is now a Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh. He and his colleagues are continuing research on regeneration of the injured optic nerve and on preservation of retinal ganglion cells. Dr. Takaaki Kuwajima is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He has 19 years of experience in research on neuronal development, injury, and disease, and his lab is currently focused on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of how RGC protection, optic nerve regeneration, and restoration of visual functions after optic nerve injury can be achieved.
