Handmade frames as a way to nurture creativity

I have a special relationship with wood. I remember when I was about 13 years old, I was spending hours, days and months in a woodworking workshop. I was in awe observing a miracle how a piece of deadwood became alive and it could fly through the air with amazing speed and it could reach the top of any tree. I made boomerangs and each boomerang had a different flightpath and its own character. I didn’t have a teacher, just an article from a DIY magazine and some hand tools.. As adults, when we are starting a new chapter in life, our childhood passions, those small lessons of life, those small victories that no one has ever noticed, precisely those childhood experiences are the source of our secret powers. It’s winter. To keep my creativity in the best shape I need to create, learn, work, explore new fields. Thankfully, I don’t have the budget to order a professional carpenter to make several different frames for me. Consequently I need to go through the process of learning by myself. Reaching to the child of me, who now has the access to the best modern power tools, it’s a dream come true. What started as a weekend relaxation project, it turned out to open a door of endless possibilities and another level of expression. I never knew these possibilities existed. I always considered framing as a necessary nuisance to my exhibitions, never as a field that my project could grow upon. But now, I understand, there are many ways to make a frame. It could be a generic one, or it could be a half generic one, or it could be handmade from scratch. Now I know I can pick different kinds of wood, I know what kind of wood am I looking for and where to get it, which joinery technique is possible to do and which finish do my frames need. I guess the difference between a generic frame and handmade frame is the same as the difference between a handmade photographic print and a computer drawing also known as an inkjet.
