Sudden cardiac death remains a major cause of death in the industrialised world. Implantable cardioverter–defibrillators have been shown to be an effective therapy option for the primary prevention of SCD in patients at high risk of SCD. About sixty percent (60%) of ICDs are implanted for primary prevention, the remaining for secondary prevention. The treatment of patients largely depends on age, comorbidities and reason for implantation (primary vs. secondary prevention).
