How do different PAF pickups perform? In this PAF shootout my vintage Greco EG 59/60 (1989/90) first features a boutique set from Evil Sheep Pickups (UK), before being restored back to its original Tokai Mk2 Screamin’ PAFs — and finally compared to Gibson Burstbucker Pros in an Epiphone SG. Both sets bring out different strengths in the Greco – the originals push the amp into breakup a bit earlier, while the Evil Sheep set delivers a clear and dynamic response. But to start with, the1990 Korean Epiphone SG enters the picture with a pair of Gibson Burstbucker Pros. Although these aren’t exact vintage PAF clones (they use Alnico V magnets and a more modern voice), they make an interesting contrast in this three-way comparison. The SG also lends itself well to slide playing. All guitars are played through my ODS 50 clone with a Celestion Heritage G12-65 and a touch of grit from the Sweet Honey Overdrive Deluxe.
