Mellow Thing - Live in Osaka Japan 2.21.25 for Juicy Chan Shot by DJ Dove I had landed in Tokyo and went straight to a gig to play my tracks of unreleased and exclusive music. It was at Earthdom in Shibuya hosted by none other than the legendary Shin Miyata of Barrio Gold Records. I remember there being lots of cholos and cholas being dropped off in low riders and being extremely nervous. So nervous that I didn’t look up until midway during my set and seeing everyone just grooving - elbows up y todo! The sight brought a proud tear to my eye as it was a very inspiring moment for me. The fact that I was on the other side of the world, a virtual nobody in Japan, playing my music and receiving so much love from strangers - strangers who are now my support system. One person attending the show made me a sign for my cassette in Japanese which I was very grateful for since another person ended up buying them all out to sell at his record store. Immediately after my set, Shin asked me where I would be the next couple of weeks during my stay since he wanted to help me get another gig or two. I told em I’d be mostly in Osaka and then hooked me up with a gig with DJ Dove at his monthly showcase “Juicy Chan”. The gig happen to land on my last night in Japan. Me and my wife took the train to one of the 3 downtowns in Osaka to meet Dove. He picked us up in his Corolla from the train station. He had a small boombox in the backseat playing a cassette tape from one of the DJs’ I had performed with in Tokyo. We were using google translate to communicate. He showed me his phone that read ; “We’re are your cassettes? I want to buy one and play it”. I showed em my phone that read; “man I’m sorry, some guy at the Earthdom show bought them all”. He drove us to a shopping mall parking lot we’re we left his car and walked to a near by restaurant owned by one of his friends. It was called W & B Delicious Service and was a skateboard centric type of establishment, complete with a few fingerboard obstacles. Dove ordered a dish called Tako Rice - so bomb! They had a dj booth there with a couple turntables and Dove began to play us some records. I believe they call these types of places [insert genre here] Kissa’s. We had a couple drinks and then headed out towards a near by Family Mart. On the walk he told me how he spent some time in Jamaica and fell in love with Dub and Reggae music. He said when he came back to Japan he left all his cloth behind and filled his suitcase with stacks of vinyl. We got to the mart where another one of his friends was waiting for us. He was a taxi cab driver there in Osaka. We piled into the car and headed toward Dotonbori, where Bar Muffin was located and we’re the gig was going to be. We got dropped off and started walking toward another restaurant. I told em “Dove I’m too full to eat more” and said “it’s ok you can just drink instead”. We went into restaurant that had floors of rooms with tables. We found a floor with a table and ordered some highballs. Then one by one all the other DJs for the gig started showing up. I got to meet Larva, Mikki, Misty Bluefish, and Fuse. Turned out Larva and Mikki both played in their own Punk bands just like me. Larva showed me videos of when he toured the US west coast. It was about 8pm and I didn’t know until after meeting everyone that the gig was set to start at 11pm-5am! My hotel room was nearby so I left them to get ready. I met them later on in another building where Bar Muffin was located at. It was a huge building with so many other bars there. They had a huge cabinet of speakers as the PA system equipped with this ultra clean and vintage mixer. You could feel every hit of the music on that thing and if it was turned up to 10 it would blow the room down. The other DJs did their thing as I waited for my set which was around 3am? My flight home was at 10am. I was treated to some locally grown herbs that got me lifted after not inhaling for over 3 weeks. Again I was nervous but was confident in my music. I looked up during my 1 hour set and say a big group of skater just super vibing out in between visits to the restroom to hit the herb. It was really a glorious experience. I played tons of as of then unreleased tracks featuring Peso 90003, Eddy Rotten, Hippie C, Specs, CRAEV, everyone really who you might recognize from my camp. They kept calling me “SHIBUI” which I didn’t know what it was but they seemed hyped about to bestow the name to me. [Japanese aesthetic term describing a particular beauty that is simple, subtle, and unobtrusive, often translated as "understated elegance" or "refined austerity"] Needles to say I’m lucky that Shin Miyata saw something in me that he wanted to share it with his friends. Gracias Shin, Dove, Mikki, Larva, Fuse, Misty, Ayaka, Minami y BT. I am forever grateful for this experience
