Before beginning the dissection, the structures in the suprahyoid region are reviewed. The course of the facial artery is traced, and the dorsal surface of the tongue is examined. An incision is then made through the mucous membrane of the floor of the mouth between the tongue and the internal surface of the mandible. The position of the styloglossus muscle is noted, as is the duct of the submandibular gland. The position of the lingual nerve is indicated, as is the submandibular ganglion and the other extrinsic muscles of the tongue. The points of origin and attachment of these muscles are noted. The other salivary glands are also described. The nerve supply of the tongue is reviewed. Copyright: The National Library of Medicine believes this item to be in the public domain.
