What are Boils? A boil is a painful, swollen, pus-filled lump that develops beneath the skin when a hair follicle becomes infected, usually as a result of bacteria entering through a break in the skin. The most common cause is a bacterial infection from Staphylococcus aureus, often referred to as staph. This bacterium normally lives on the surface of the skin without causing harm, but under certain conditions such as cuts, friction, or weakened immune function, it can penetrate deeper into the tissue leading to inflammation, redness, tenderness and the accumulation of pus. Boils can vary in size and may grow larger over time, often becoming more painful as pressure builds beneath the skin.
