Like many people, I watched the series finale of Stranger Things and found myself wondering how much the show fell off in quality over the course of its run. (And where on earth its reported budget of $400-480 million for its final season went, but that's another story.) And the moment in the final episode that stood out to me the most was when Eleven confronted the Mind Flayer - which was now a giant spider - on the barren, sepia-toned, green-screen-looking planet called the Abyss. It was Stranger Things trying to be really really big, and in this video essay, I argue that the existence of this moment exemplified where Stranger Things went wrong, and that the Duffer Brothers were so fixated on making this show like a big, blockbuster movie that pretty much everything else about the show came at its expense.
