Thank you for checking out my submission to the 2026 Tiny Desk Contest. This was filmed live in the Garage at the Hawk & Hare in Winter Springs, Florida. I've been working on this song since last April to honor the resilience and dignity of friends and neighbors impacted by our Nation's immigration policies. I am so proud to finally get to share it here. Huge shout out to our local affiliate WMFE Orlando. Whether it's through song or journalism, we need public radio now more than ever to amplify the voices that some out there seem to want to silence. Thank you all for listening. Special thanks to GenieKat for her boundless love, support, and encouragement. Connect: https://www.instagram.com/roscoe.kell... Lyrics: I was driving across Georgia road weary from all the miles I pulled off at farmstead to stretch my legs a little while Bouncing down the dirt road that cut through all the fields I saw a group of workers laboring like they had quotas to fill Man, it was hot one heat not meant for man or beast There was nothing much I could do but I could fetch some water at the least I stopped the truck in a shady spot behind a rundown shack The workers moseyed over sweat dripping down their poor backs As it turned out all three of them were just one single family They came up fifteen years ago escaping crime and poverty The daughter did the talking her name was Mirabelle Her mother was Catalina and her father was named Miguel We sat there in the shade a while as I listened to Mirabelle tell their tale About living from farm to farm from cheap motel to cheap motel When life’s thrown them lemons they’ve used them rind and all In times like these before us there ain’t time for little kids to be small As hard as life is she said tt was getting harder by the day Her parents got a letter telling them that they could not stay But Mirabelle was born here, called no other country home So they’re all stuck in this quandary nothing left to do but roam Man, it was a hot one hate not fit for man or beast There was nothing much I could do but I could write a song at the least I bit back my anger and I offered them a hug I apologized for this moment but Mirabelle just gave me a shrug She said, I get that this is new to you but me I’ve lived it all my short life State to state field to field just one step ahead of strife She held my hand and kissed it then motioned me away She said, we’ve got more work to do, maybe there will be better times someday Y'all, we got more work to do and this job cannot wait When you lay down to sleep tonight, pray For better times someday Ora por tiempos mejores algun dia
