In this video, I explore whether it’s possible to create a functional clock jewel using commercially available synthetic ruby. Traditional watch and clock jewels are often difficult to source and expensive, so after speaking to a fantastic clock maker with this interesting idea, I decided to experiment. Using a round-cut synthetic ruby and a basic diamond drill bit, I attempted to replicate the tiny precision bearing jewels found in mechanical clocks and watches. This is just a concept at this stage — I haven’t tested it in a working clock yet — but the results are promising! If you’re into horology, watchmaking, clock repair, or precision DIY experiments, this is one to watch. Let me know in the comments if you’d like to see it tested in a live movement.
