It was a Nazi concentration and extermination camp built and operated by the Schutzstaffel on the outskirts of the city of Lublin during the German occupation of Poland in World War II. It was among the largest of the Nazi concentration camps, with seven gas chambers, two wooden gallows, and a total of 227 structures. Although initially intended for forced labor rather than extermination, it was used to kill people on an industrial scale during Operation Reinhardt, the German plan to kill all Polish Jews in their own occupied homeland. The camp, which was in operation from October 1, 1941 to July 22, 1944, was captured almost intact. The rapid advance of the Soviet Red Army during Operation Bagration prevented the SS from destroying much of its infrastructure. The camp was named Majdanek ("little Majdan") by locals in 1941 because it was adjacent to the Lublin ghetto of Majdan Tatarski. Nazi documents initially described the camp as a Waffen-SS prisoner of war camp based on the way it was financed and operated. It was renamed Konzentrationslager Lublin by the Reich Security Main Office on 9 April 1943, but the local Polish name remained more popular. After the liberation of the camp in July 1944, the area was officially protected by the Soviet Union. In the autumn, while the war was still ongoing, it began to be preserved as a museum. The crematorium ovens and gas chambers were largely intact and served as some of the best examples of Nazi Germany's genocidal policy. Today, the Majdanek State Museum is a Holocaust memorial museum and educational center entirely dedicated to the memory of the atrocities committed in the network of concentration, slave labor and extermination camps and subcamps in KL Lublin.
