What you are now enjoying is the British Progressive Rock band Yes on February 14, 1974 during the tour supporting their new album Tales From Topographic Oceans. The band performed at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York which was the home venue of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders franchise. The Islanders won four Stanley Cup championships in a row during the 1978-1979 through 1981-1982 NHL seasons. You'll notice a lot of fish imagery used on the artwork for the band's 1973 album Tales From Topographic Oceans. The Islanders also have an interesting history with fish. In 1995 the team changed the logo used since their NHL debut in 1972 and went with a fisherman as goalie motif which looked strikingly like the image used by the frozen seafood company Gorton's. It became the object of ridicule across the league as the Islanders 1995 squad struggled and finished with a 22-50-10 record. The team and the "Fisherman" logo displayed on their jerseys were an embarrassment. Artist Roger Dean and Yes founder and vocalist Jon Anderson discussed ideas for the TFTO cover during a March 1973 flight from London to Tokyo for the Japanese leg of the Close to the Edge Tour: • Yes Live: 1973 Japan CTTE Tour Monster Tra... Dean explained that the final collection of landmarks on the front cover was more complex than intended "because it seemed appropriate to the nature of the project that everyone who wanted to contribute should do so". Anderson wanted a Mayan temple at Chichen Itza with the sun behind it. Drummer Alan White suggested using markings from the plains of Nazca. The landscape comprised, amongst other things, famous English rocks including Brimham Rocks and single stones from Avebury and Stonehenge. Dean thought "the result is a somewhat incongruous mixture, but effective nonetheless." Phil Carson of Atlantic Records remembered that during a dinner with Anderson he was told the name of the album would be Tales From Tobergraphic Oceans. Jon claimed he had invented the word "tobergraphic" which he used to depict one of astronomer Fred Hoyle's theories on space. Ahmet Ertegun's brother Nesuhi informed Anderson that "tobergraphic" was similar to the word "topographic" and described its meaning, and Anderson changed the title accordingly. Rick Wakeman jokingly nicknamed the album Tales From Toby's Graphic Go-Kart. The 77-date tour supporting the band's new double album of four pieces called Tales From Topographic Oceans visited Europe and North America between November 1973 and April 1974, with a two-hour set of pieces from their iconic 1972 masterpiece Close to the Edge and Tales from Topographic Oceans performed in their entirety. Yes brought four times as much equipment for the 1974 TFTO campaign than their previous tours, which included an elaborate set designed by Roger Dean and his brother Martyn. Two versions of the stage were built. The second, used from the American leg onward, consisted of fiberglass structures, dry ice effects, a drum platform surrounding White and a tunnel that the band emerged from. During one show, the structure around White that opened and closed failed to operate, leaving him trapped inside. White and Rick Wakeman claimed the incident was the inspiration behind a scene depicted in the rock mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap. At the March 19, 1974 show at the Long Beach Arena in California two naked women came onto the stage and danced while the band played their encore. The band including vocalist Jon Anderson all cracked up while performing the song. Rick later deadpanned "What a funny place to keep a hairbrush!" Yes performed the TFTO piece Ritual until the end of their 1976 North American tour, after which material from Tales from Topographic Oceans would not be performed for 20 years. That was when the Classic Yes line-up reunited for the 1996 Keys to Ascension album and tour dates in San Luis Obispo, California where they performed The Revealing Science of God. SETLIST: 1.
