"So sweet is the torment that fills my heart..." (Sí dolce è’l tormento / Ch’in seno mi sta). So begins this beautiful, melancholic song by Claudio Monteverdi, the subject of this lesson. Claudio Monteverdi is credited with the development of the opera and is an important transitional figure between the end of the Renaissance and beginning of the Baroque eras. He was a choirmaster and singer, a stringplayer and composer. “Sí dolce è’l tormento” is an aria from one of Monteverdi’s many madrigals. While some would classify it as an early Baroque composition, it still manifests the transitional characteristics of much of Monteverdi’s music. Its lyrics are lamenting in a typical melancholic Renaissance style. The full first stanza reads: “So sweet is the torment That lies in my heart, That I can live content With unfeeling, infatuating beauty. In this earthly paradise Vanity grows And piety fades: Yet like a rock Against the wave of pride My faith will always hold fast.” In this video Simon Powis offers a lesson on all the things you'll need to play this arrangement (which is by Dave Belcher from our Easy Classical Guitar: Volume 2 Renaissance book).
