Croatia, once a part of Yugoslavia, is a diverse country with a diverse history going back to the 6th century Roman Empire, and being part of 14th century Hungary and in 1918 became part of Yugoslavia. In 1941, Germany invaded the country as part of Nazi puppet State as part of Yugoslavia. Croatia declared independence in 1991 and fought the Serbs that were attempting to remove the Croatians from the country, but the Croatians were successful in forcing the Serbs out in 1995. During our travels in the area we could see evidence of this fighting as burned out buildings and bullet holes in our travels through the countryside. The country is very friendly and hospitable. It is mostly known for the wonderful coastal region with beautiful coastal views and cities like; Split (with waterfront, bell tower, old palace, vibrant outdoor markets, and beautiful sunsets), Pula (with it's Roman Amphitheater), Rovinj (charming "Old Town"), and Dubrovnik ("The Pearl of the Adriatic" with it's Old Walled City with back streets for walking as well and walks on the old stone walls). Dubrovnik is a big tourist stop and can be crowded during the ay when cruise ships are in port but there is lots to do in the city including a cable car to Mount Sid with breathtaking panoramic views of the city and historic information about the 1990's war. A small walk-on ferry took us 10 minutes to Lokrum Island for a quiet relaxing place with walking trails and small beaches where locals go for afternoon swimming. We traveled to the "hill country" to Montovan and Groznjan to view the beautiful countryside, walk their backstreets, and indulge ourselves with their world famous Black Truffle dinners. A highlight of our travel to Croatia was the Plitvice Lakes National Park ( A UNESCO World Heritage Site), an outstanding series of lakes and interconnected waterfalls with miles of meandering trails and boardwalks that provide an incredible beautiful experience.
