whew boi. is that time again, isn't it—p@d season. this song is available for free download/PWYW, along with the rest of the stupidly good album, on bandcamp: https://poniesatdawn.bandcamp.com/ make sure to follow p@d on all platforms!   / poniesatdawn      / poniesatdawn     / ponies-at-dawn   now that that's out of the way—there's a lot to be said about this track, even if i'm rather unsure as to how actually interesting most of that would be to people lol. before i get to that, though, i want to thank EPT and the rest of the p@d crew for putting this project together; Guardians is ridiculous in its quality, and i'm really proud to have taken part. shouts to trix for putting up with me during the production process, alex & faulty for the feedback they've given me in the later stages, and huge thanks to panic for the mixing advice and mastering the track ♥ alright. the track. superficially, i think it's quite obvious what the theme of it is: NMM vs. Celestia, of course. the reality is that there was some subtext here that really influenced how i went about writing this track, though. the linchpin here is the following story: https://www.fimfiction.net/story/1696... i could gush about everything that i like about it pretty much indefinitely, but i'll focus on what's relevant to the song: the interpretation of the fall of luna and her eventual defeat here is absolutely enthralling to me. the idea that her transformation wasn't ended in just minutes, as portrayed in Twilight's Kingdom, and the absolutely mindbending horror of what her reign resulted in before being put to an end singlehandedly by Celestia inspired me to pretty much score the event—which happens off screen in the fanfic—as best as i could. part 1 is starting out in complete darkness, with the possibility of NMM's minions striking at any time to continue their crimes against the civillian population of Equestria—and sure enough, they do. part 2 is the sun rising and purging the entirety of their filth of the face of the planet. not sure how well i did. i guess another layer of subtext is that what happened at the end of the Longest Night can be seen as an overblown metaphor of the day/night cycle in general, and i did think about that a lot while working on this. even when it hasn't been dark for two weeks, and you haven't been assaulted, maimed and violated by horrible creatures continuously there is something majestic about the first light of dawn that my musical interpretation of it can barely do it any justice. it is the same fight being fought every morning, really, though of course at a much smaller scale. plus, this is fitting, cause summer solstice/summer sun celebration/celestia day was two days ago. c: visuals by myself art: pt.1: this artist appears to have disappeared a long time ago; had a hard time finding a good picture for this section, and this one is ancient, so... no proper source, i'm afraid. https://derpibooru.org/4901?q=castle+... pt.2: cmaggot is all types of amazing. do check him out. http://cmaggot.deviantart.com/art/Rai...
