In this video we visit Ringwood, a busy station in Melbourne's east that serves as the junction for the Belgrave and Lilydale lines. Here we see some Metro Trains Melbourne X'trapolis 100 EMU's arrive and depart the station, but we also see steam locomotives K183 & K190 arrive and depart the station as Steamrail was operating steam shuttles on the line between Ringwood and Lilydale on this particular day. Ringwood station opened on the 1st December 1882 when the line from Camberwell to Lilydale was built. It became a junction station in 1889 when the line to Upper Ferntree Gully was opened. It was at this time that the brick building on platform 3 was built (one of the few constructed in the Tudor style by the Victorian Railways) while the weatherboard building on platforms 1 & 2 was built two years later in 1891. Both buildings are heritage listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. It was originally a two platform station, with platform 1 provided in 1999 which allowed for additional service flexibility at the station, especially as services originate and terminate here during the day. In the mid 2010's Ringwood station underwent a major upgrade to coincide with the expansion of the adjacent Eastland Shopping Centre on the other side of the Maroondah Highway. Completed in January 2016 at a cost of $66 million, the upgrade included a overhead new concourse with stair, lift and ramp access, extra platform amenities and shelters, reconfigured bus interchange, new public plazas (including retention of the old signal box as a cafe), and refurbishment of the heritage listed station buildings. In my opinion the upgrade was highly welcome as the old station was rather dingy and had poor accessibility, amenity and crime. Infact in a 2011 survey by community organisation Pt4me2, Ringwood was rated by commuters as the second worst station in Melbourne. The new station isn't 100% perfect; I have some complaints about the weather protection and the amount of time it takes to walk down from the concourse to platforms 1 & 2 (why couldn't they just build the stairs closer to the ticket barriers?) but overall I do quite like the new Ringwood station and I think it's one of the better new stations in Melbourne. The station looks good; successfully mixing new with the old, provides good levels of amenity and easy interchange with bus services, and integrates well with the adjacent Eastland Shopping Centre.
