Pelvic Physiotherapy is sometimes referred to as “Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy” or “Women's’ Health Physiotherapy”. Men can suffer from pelvic dysfunctions too, so we prefer the term Pelvic Physiotherapy. Pelvic Physiotherapy involves treatment of the bones, muscles, nerves and joints of the pelvis and hips to correct dysfunctions that lead to a variety of problems like incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse. Cornerstone’s Team of Pelvic Physiotherapists have specialized training, and are rostered with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario to be able to provide this treatment. All of our treatments take place in a well appointed and completely private treatment room. We recommend that all pelvic health patients undergo an internal exam. Many key muscle groups are only accessible internally. However, if this can not be tolerated initially, we can start with external techniques and progress to an internal exam when appropriate. After the assessment, your Physiotherapist will discuss your diagnosis with you, and recommend a customized treatment plan to resolve your problem. This plan will normally involve follow-up treatment at the clinic, as well as some independent ‘exercises’ for you to do between appointments. Common Symptoms of Pelvic Dysfunction ● Incontinence – Leakage of urine or feces. ● Urgency – A strong urge to urinate or defecate. ● Frequency – Having to urinate so often that it disrupts your usual daily routine. ● Chronic Pelvic Pain – pain, burning or pressure in the pelvic region. ● Constipation – difficulty passing stools ● Painful Intercourse ● Nocturia – waking often at night to urinate Remember that these symptoms are very common and can be resolved. In fact 30% of women experience some form of incontinence and up to ⅓ of women who give birth vaginally will have some pelvic organ prolapse.
