Both cars share the same turbocharged G16E-GTS three-cylinder engine, a marvel that has demonstrated immense potential in the aftermarket. But before we get into how insanely tuneable these engine are, lets start with the stock motor car. The GR Yaris is assembled at the GR HQ in Motomachi, where it's fine-tuned to deliver a thrilling performance on a variety of road types. Unlike the standard Yaris, it boasts an aggressive design and a drivetrain that promises a fun and engaging driving experience. In Japan, the GR Yaris is available in two versions. The RS version caters to those seeking a sportier base-Yaris experience. It features front-wheel drive, a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter inline-3 engine producing 120 PS, and a Direct Shift-CVT transmission. Now For those who truly understand the GR pedigree, the RZ version is the logical choice. It comes equipped with four-wheel drive, Torsen differentials, a manual six-speed transmission, and one of the most potent three-cylinder engines in production. This is the GR version we get in the rest of the world Now At the core of the GR Yaris lies the compact and lightweight G16E-GTS engine. It's a DOHC 12-valve powerhouse with a single-scroll ball-bearing turbo and a compression ratio of 10.5:1. Toyota's D-4ST direct/port injection system, multi-oil jet piston-cooling, enlarged exhaust valves, and a CNC-machined intake port contribute to its incredible performance. The European version of the G16E-GTS engine churns out an impressive 272. Notably, this engine delivers a massive 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque. With 166 HP per liter, it outperforms even the 1.5-liter 3-cylinder BMW engine that used to power the i8 sportscar. Now The GR Yaris, equipped with the G16E-GTS engine, with its 4 wheel drive and lightweight design can achieve 60 mph in under 5.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 143 mph, albeit electronically limited. But all of that is in its stock form and as I said this thing can be tuned to the moon. You see In a jaw-dropping feat of engineering, there's now a GR Yaris generating a staggering 740 horsepower while retaining its stock engine block and even more impressively its still fully stock internals too. This mighty pocket rocket is owned by Peter Freedman, founder of Rode Microphones, and it was brought to life by the Australian tuning maestros at Powertune But how. Well lets get into it. So even in its stock from this engine features a turbocharger that compresses incoming air, significantly increasing the engine's power output. And as we discussed even in its stock form its really strong, However, it's the engine's robust construction enables it to handle much more boost. You see Toyota's engineers designed the G16E-GTS with an unwavering commitment to strength and durability. The engine block boasts extraordinarily thick cylinder walls, ensuring it can withstand the tremendous forces generated during high-performance driving. The block design is bedplate-style, which means it's exceptionally rigid and stable. This design choice is crucial for keeping the forged crankshaft and connecting rods firmly in place, even under extreme conditions. It also minimizes the risk of engine damage, making it an ideal candidate for substantial power upgrades. Then The G16E-GTS features generously sized intake runners that feed a copious supply of air to the three cylinders. This ensures efficient combustion, optimizing power production. All of this over engineering makes the stock G16E-GTS the perfect candidate for tuning and that’s exactly what the Australian company did. you see powertune took The GR Yaris and strategically enhanced it. They upgraded the head gasket and reinforced the head studs. Additionally, they added an aftermarket intercooler from Plazmaman replacing the original one, and the three-cylinder engine benefited from a Garrett G30-770 turbocharger. Powertune Australia further improved the vehicle with a turbo exhaust manifold, intercooler piping, and a dump pipe sourced from Golebys Parts. The package also included a MoTec Yaris Plug-in ECU. To optimize fuel delivery, 2,200cc Secondary Injectors from Bosch were installed, replacing the stock injectors. They equipped the Yaris with an Elixr Brushless fuel pump and a cat-back exhaust system by Akrapovic. Notably, the gearbox was upgraded to a six-speed sequential transmission from X-Shift, complemented by an ATS Triple Carbon clutch. And that’s the full list.
