HAWES - A tour of Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales, England We take a walk around beautiful Hawes, a popular visitor and tourist destination most famous as the home of Wensleydale Cheese. Let's explore! Hawes, nestled in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, is a charming and historic market town that serves as the capital of Upper Wensleydale. Its name, derived from the Old Norse word for "pass between mountains," aptly describes its location between the impressive fells of Buttertubs and Fleet Moss. For centuries, Hawes has been a focal point for the surrounding rural communities, evidenced by its long-standing Tuesday market, which received its first royal charter in 1699, though a market has existed here since 1307. This tradition continues to this day, bringing a vibrant atmosphere to the town as locals and visitors gather to trade and socialize. The town's history is deeply intertwined with the agricultural heritage of the Dales. Historically, Hawes hosted significant cattle and sheep fairs, as well as cheese fairs, reflecting the importance of farming in the region. Today, this heritage is celebrated at the Dales Countryside Museum, housed in the old Wensleydale Railway Station, offering insights into the traditional life and industries of the area, from lead mining to farming. A visit to the Wensleydale Creamery is also a must, as Hawes is the home of the famous Wensleydale cheese, a tradition dating back to the 12th century with the arrival of French monks. Beyond its historical and cultural attractions, Hawes is a fantastic base for exploring the stunning natural beauty of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Surrounded by rolling hills, stone walls, and picturesque valleys, it's a haven for walkers and outdoor enthusiasts. Popular nearby attractions include Hardraw Force, England's highest single-drop waterfall, the dramatic Buttertubs Pass, and the tranquil Semerwater, one of the largest natural lakes in North Yorkshire. With its blend of history, tradition, and breathtaking scenery, Hawes offers a quintessential Yorkshire Dales experience. I hope you enjoyed this Hawes walking tour.
