Open MRI and Closed MRI work in a similar way but there are a few differences between them. In any MRI unit there is an invisible magnetic field generated by a powerful magnet. In a standard closed magnet, the magnetic field is contained within a donut like tube which is open on both ends. Therefore the magnet can achieve a high magnetic field strength which is typically 1.5 Tesla. Open MRI machines, on the other hand, have two flat parallel magnets and are open around all sides. The open configurations is appealing to patients who are claustrophobic or have a larger body type as they may find an open magnet more tolerable than a closed one. Because of the open configuration, open MRI scanners have a lower magnetic field strength, typically around 0.3 Tesla. At First Look MRI https://www.firstlookmri.com/ we have both scanners; an “open” scanner at our Braselton location and a “Closed Wide Bore” scanner at our Atlanta Brookhaven location.
