Welcome back to the studio! This week, we're gonna dig deep into an excellent pattern that you can use to improvise over the chord changes to jazz standards. The sequence is based on a really simple concept: go up a triad and resolve down a step. From here, we can play it in a multitude of different ways over every chord and scale quality. I'll teach you how to play the sequence both on and off the beat across the entire range of the guitar. Then, we'll go over how to use this in combination with other elements of improvisation like arpeggios, pivots, enclosures, bebop half steps, and more to create some great lines over a ii-V-I progression. Finally, we'll apply the pattern to the A sections from two standard tunes. First will be the chord changes to Donna Lee, by Charlie Parker. Second, we'll apply it to the excellent standard, Nobody Else But Me. In both of these examples we'll explore how to adapt this pattern to harmony and weave it through the whole progression.
