Birkenhead Priory: A lot of history behind its ruins!!!

Birkenhead Priory is the oldest building in Merseyside, and It was founded in the 1150s for a small community of Benedictine monks. The priory community never grew and, with a very low annual income, the monastery was suppressed by Henry VIII in 1536. Once the monks had gone, the property was managed by a royal bailiff. The lands and priory buildings were leased to Ralph Worsley, before he bought the estate in 1545. His descendants inherited and owned the property until 1713. The Priory buildings fell into disrepair and, the site was reduced to ruins by the early 19th century. Until the mid 19th century, Birkenhead had a very small population, however the town underwent rapid growth in no small part down to the local shipbuilders founded by William Laird. In 1824 he began working with his son on projects to develop construction of iron hulled vessels. After Laird’s death in 1841, the famous British company Cammell Laird was created by the merge of Laird Brothers and Johnson Cammell & Co. The Chapter House survives because it was used as a chapel after Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries, and when the priory was rescued it was refitted, serving today as a place of worship. St Mary’s was the first parish church at Birkenhead for 150 years. It was designed by Thomas Rickman and built alongside the Priory ruins in 1821. The tower is dedicated as a memorial to the submarine HMS Thetis, which sank in 1939 with the loss of 99 lives. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Birkenhead Priory è la costruzione più antica del Merseyside ed è stata fondata nel 1150 per una piccola comunità di monaci benedettini.
