Johnny's Ghetto/ If I Rise (On The Wings Of The Dawn)

This song takes me back to a summer, many years ago, when many of the couples in my circle of friends decided to get married. We now jokingly refer to this fateful summer as the ‚wedding summer‘. One of the brides, a former flatmate of mine, asked me to play some live music at her wedding ceremony. Seeking inspiration for an appropriate new composition, I referred to the text she and her husband-to-be had chosen for the occasion: “If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.” (Psalm 139; 9-10). I based my new song, “If I Rise”, on these powerful words. Gorgeous Gutschi and I then gave a debut performance of the song at the wedding-ceremony. It was generally well received, especially by a visibly moved bride. Since performing “If I Rise” on a few more occasions (including other wedding ceremonies), we have made the song an integral part of our repertoire.
