It’s fair to say that the Xbox One wasn’t the greatest of successes in the gaming industry. It wasn’t ever at the level where thousands of units had to be dumped into the desert, a la E.T., but Microsoft definitely learned that the third time wasn’t the charm when it came to their consoles. It’s hard to reveal a console quite as terribly as they did, the only thing that could have made it worse is if they’d unmasked Master Chief on stage and it was a bunch of Rabbids inside. Bad PR on the road to launch and a woeful lack of big name exclusives meant that Microsoft’s former flagship console lost a lot of ground to the PS4 and even the Nintendo Switch, despite it launching 4 years later. However, Microsoft slowly reversed their fortunes during the Xbox One’s life cycle with the Xbox One X being a beast of a console, and Xbox Game Pass growing to become the biggest subscription service in gaming. It also helped that they stopped trying to make a TV console and now actually make games again.
