Under the Microscope 🔬 | 75 years of Ames Lab history

In World War II, Arthur Compton approached Frank Spedding seeking a solution to a big problem: Purifying uranium. It was a minor detail that proved to be a major sticking point for advancements in nuclear science, and after Harley Wilhelm and Frank Spedding developed a process of purifying the rare material, they continued to work on other materials science problems into the Atomic Age. Ames Lab turned 75 in 2022, and to recognize all of the work we've done so far we made a short video to take a trip down memory lane. Each decade saw major shifts in the kinds of material questions science was asking, and Ames Lab has developed a knack for answering them.
