Fully functional developer console is present in all PS2 builds of the original Half-Life. Gearbox didn't strip it from the release builds, and most of the console code is the same as in the old PC (WON) Half-Life builds. The engine simply checks for the "-console" launch argument as it's the case with the old WON versions. If that switch is found it sets the "console" CVAR to 1 making the console available. I'm not experienced with the PS2 platform, and I don't know whether it's possible pass launch arguments to PS2 executables, so for me it was easier to patch the binary itself. There are multiple ways to permanently enable the console, you can change the default value of the "console" CVAR, replace the jump instruction when it checks the value etc. The patch information provided bellow is a minimalist approach that enables the console by changing a single byte: Known game versions with corresponding offsets and values: ● HL PS2 USA ver. 0.10: offset 0x00165428: change 01 to 00 ● HL PS2 USA ver. 2.40: offset 0x00166988: change 01 to 00 How to patch the binary: 1) extract the "system.cnf" configuration from the root directory of your HL PS2 disc image 2) open the extracted file and check what version of the game you have 3) extract the main binary (SLUS_200.66 for example) from the root directory 4) open it using hex editor of your choice (i.e. WinHex) 5) jump to the given offset (Alt+G in WinHex) 6) double check that the original value at that offset is 01, and change it to 00 7) save the changes 8) put the patched binary back to the image file (overwriting the original one) 9) save the image file (to a new file if you don't have backup copy of the original image, just in case..) 10) boot the disc, start a new game or load one of your save files 11) activate the console by pressing the tilde (~) key 12) have fun I'm not going to upload patched binaries or modified disc images for obvious reasons. So please don't ask...
