One of my greatest fears is bringing in pests inside my house that would eventually infest my houseplants. I’ve had my fair share of battles with fungus gnats, aphids and thrips. Never again! So when it was time to repot my houseplants, I knew that I have to somehow sterilize the soil that I’m going to use. I didn’t want to use my home oven to bake the soil and I didn’t have the patience for solar sterilization. So I decided to cook or steam my soil. The key is to heat the soil to 180F for about 30 minutes. Add potting soil and wet soil with water. Soil should be damp but not soaking wet. Heat to medium-low. Cover and heat for 30 minutes, making sure that soil temperature reaches about 180F. If the soil temperature gets too high, reduce the heat. Once done, cool completely before using the soil. ► Tips Heat the soil to 180F (not higher) for about 30 minutes.
