Narrator: Marchand Steenkamp. About the story: Joachim Peiper was born on the 30th of January 1915 in the Wilmersdorf district of Berlin, then part of the German Empire. He was the third son of Woldemar Peiper, an officer in the Imperial German Army, and Charlotte Marie Schwartz, a woman from a respectable Berlin middle-class family. Charlotte represented the traditional role of an officer’s wife, focused on maintaining the social status and stability of the family. Together with Woldemar, she raised their children in a household shaped by discipline, loyalty to the German Empire, and a deep sense of national pride. Adolf Hitler came to power on the 30th of January 1933. The same day the political climate drastically changed, and Joachim Peiper turned 18. Like many young men of his time, Peiper, in the company of his brother Horst, joined the Hitler Youth, which was the Nazi-organized youth movement. There he was trained in military discipline, physical endurance, and Nazi ideology. He quickly proved to be ambitious, charismatic, and loyal to the Nazi cause. In October 1933, Peiper joined the SS, the elite paramilitary organization under the leadership of Heinrich Himmler. His rise through the ranks was swift.
