(21 Jul 1998) English/Nat A 23-year-old man appeared in court today on charges of murdering the three young Quinn brothers in Ballymoney, Northern Ireland ten days ago. Thomas Robert Garfield Gilmour of Ballymoney denied the charges during a hearing in Belfast Magistrates Court. The boys died when their home was fire bombed in a sectarian attack apparently set off when Protestant marchers were stopped from parading through a Catholic neighborhood. There was no glimpse of Gilmour as he arrived at the Belfast court under police guard. During the hearing it was revealed he had no criminal record and he denied being a member of any paramilitary organisation. A number of other people are being held for questioning in the case, but police declined today to say how many were being detained. Gilmour was kept in custody pending a court appearance on August 12th. The Quinn brothers - Richard, 11, Mark, 10, and Jason 9 - were killed in an arson attack on their home in Ballymoney. Their deaths shocked Protestant and Catholic communities throughout Northern Ireland. Police say the attack was linked to a rise in tensions in Northern Ireland caused by a violent standoff outside Portadown between Protestant marchers and security forces blocking them from parading through the Catholic neighborhood. It is believed the family was targeted because the boy's mother, 29-year-old Chrissie Quinn, was a Catholic who lived with a Protestant boyfriend. Stunned by the murders of the boys, some leaders of the Orange Order that organised the march called for an end to the confrontation between marchers and security forces.
