This occasion marks the Birth Anniversary of the Great Saint - Musician, the Legendary Santoor Virtuoso & Composer, late Pandit Bhajan Sopori ji, who was hailed as the ‘Saint of Santoor’ and the ‘King of Strings’. Santoor Maestro & Composer Pandit Abhay Rustum Sopori presented Raga Sohni on Santoor accompanied by eminent Tabla maestro Pandit Ramkumar Mishra on Tabla & Ms. Anoushka Majumdar on Tanpura, a disciple of Pt. Bhajan Sopori ji & Pt. Abhay Sopori The second edition of the World Santoor Day was organised by SaMaPa (Sopori Academy for Music and Performing Arts) at Chinmaya Mission Auditorium in the capital. The first ‘World Santoor Day’ was celebrated in 2024 by the artist and the creative arts fraternity and many prominent cultural organizations of the country together like legends like Composer AR Rahman, Bhajan Samrat Anup Jalota, Singer Kailash Kher, Mohan Veena exponent Pt. Vishwamohan Bhatt, TV personality Siddharth Kak, Musicologists Pt. Vijay Shankar Mishra and Pt. Ravindra Misra, and others. The World Santoor Day highlights the spiritual and historical depth of the Santoor, especially its roots in Kashmir Shaivism. Apart from Delhi, the main centre of celebrating the World Santoor Day, the 2nd edition of the occasion was also celebrated in various other places across the world like Argentina, Colombia, USA, China, etc. and Odisha in India. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Pt. Abhay Rustum Sopori: He is a versatile Santoor Maestro & Music Composer Pandit Abhay Rustum Sopori. He has been the only Indian classical musician other than the Great Music Legend Pandit Bhajan Sopori ji to have composed and conducted Sufi and folk music ensembles & orchestras, and has also been the youngest recipient of almost all the awards that he has received in recognition of his outstanding contribution and achievements in the field of music including the prestigious United Nations accredited Mahatma Gandhi Seva Medal, Gandhi Global Peace Award, ‘Top Grade Artist’ (Santoor) and 'Top Grade Composer' awarded by All India Radio, Dhrupad Samman – Maharaja Swati Tirunal Travancore Award, Atal Shikhar Samman presented at the Parliament of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan National Award, ‘J&K State Icon' title by Election Commission of India, J&K Government Award – Highest Civilian Award of Jammu and Kashmir, Bharat Shiromani Award, Sangeet Natak Akademi’s first Yuva Puraskar, amongst others. Having been presented with hundreds of felicitations across the world, his name features in various Biographical-Note Volumes published in India and abroad. He is the bearer of the rich musical legacy of great masters of music of the fabled ‘Sopori Sufiana Gharana’ of Kashmir, the exclusive traditional Santoor family of India with its roots spanning over 10 generations over more than 300 years. Born in Kashmir, he learnt music under the traditional Guru-Shishya Parampara of his mystic Shaivite – Sufi tradition from his grandfather late Pandit Shamboo Nath Sopori ji, the great Master musician hailed as the ‘Father of Music’ in Jammu and Kashmir, and from his father the Great Saint – Music Legend late Pandit Bhajan Sopori ji, the legendary Santoor virtuoso and music composer. He has composed and introduced 5 new ragas - Raga Nirmalkauns, MahaKali, Sharda ,Bhagwati and also Bhajaneshwari, a tribute to Pt. Bhajan Sopori ji, which have been widely acclaimed by the music connoisseurs and critics.
