Our spring barley variety trials site at Beal Farm in Northumberland has been sown, some five-and-a-half weeks earlier than last year. Favourable spring weather meant that the field was sown on March 17 following just 80-90mm of rainfall between January 1 and the drilling date. This is a significant contrast to last year as, prior to drilling the field on April 25, there had been more than 250mm of rain from January 1 to then. So, what does this all mean? In our first update of the 2025 growing season, Agrochemical & Technical Director David Cairns shares his expertise from the trials site, with an overview on soil conditions, fertiliser application and also an update on what our Farm Trader team are busy with on-farm at the moment. - FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA • Subscribe to Simpsons Malt TV – @SimpsonsMalt • 'Like' us on Facebook – / simpsonsmalt • Follow us on Twitter – / simpsonsmalt • Follow us on Instagram – / simpsonsmalt - EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SIMPSONS MALT Simpsons Malt is one of the largest independent, family-owned malting companies in the world with the capacity to produce around 315,000 tonnes of malt per year at its two malting sites.
