In this video I share some life lessons from The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro. It's the first time I have read this book as I now delve into reading all of Ishiguro's books. This one is the most well-known as he won the Booker Prize for it. It's a book that remains with you a long time after reading it and one initially where I thought Mr Stevens, the butler, seemed cowardly but over time, you couldn't help but understand why he did it in the manner he did. There are different themes in this book related to Professionalism, Dignity, Human Compassion, Making Mistakes, Service Above Self, Race, Class, and Privilege. The irony also struck me that nowadays, our big homes have rooms like a "butler's pantry" which is now also a sign of wealth and modernity to keep our kitchens clean from mess and meal preparation. What other rooms that servants in the past used are now in our big modern homes? I had to scratch my head over that one... What do you think of the book? What jumped out the most about this story and the characters? How do you see it relating to our modern lives? Is there dignity and professionalism in work nowadays or is this a thing of the past? Would you work for an employer that may be in a field that you don’t agree with or against your values, principles and morals? #books #literature #bookreviews #reading #novels #lifelessonsthroughbooks #lifelessons #helenblunden #activatelearning #remainsoftheday #kazuoishiguro
