Dr. Bill Johnson of Innovations Medical is here to tell us how we can tighten our skin. Hi Dr. Bill. Dr. J; Good Morning. Host: We talk about this topic a lot it’s because it’s really common a lot of people are suffering. Dr. J: More people search for it than anything else I was a little surprised to see that. Host: Yeah. Okay. So let’s talk about why this happens why the sagging and loose skin? Dr. J: Really there are three things going on that cause our skin to sagging and wrinkle over time. The first is our collagen which is the main supporting structure of our skin. We decrease in the content of collagen in our skin and what’s left kind of gets stretched and thinned it’s just not as good as it was before. Second thing that happens is we lose volume now that’s something we can all see on our cheeks around our eyes and causes our eyes sagging and our cheeks to be hallow but you can also think of it on the body because if you loose weight or have a pregnancy. Now you’ve lost a lot of volume there and you can get skin sagging because that volume loss and then the third factor is also important and we see that with muscular action it causes our skin to wrinkle like around our eyes and between our eyes and on our knees on our elbows. Host: Okay. So for the collagen loss, how does it occur and I guess there’s no way to kind of reverse that. Dr. J: Well I think the most important thing to remember about collagen loss is there is one major factor that’s a major contributor in that sun exposure our UV Light exposure and all those folks that are doing tanning beds that UV Light still doesn’t protect you from it’s damage to collagen. So using sunblocks using long sleeves using hats has real protection those things that are occurring are just your genetics, some of us are programmed to loose collagen faster smoking is a bad collagen toxin there are just a number of things going on that cause as we age our collagen to stretch and thin. Host: Okay. So there are some things we can do to prevent like just good lifestyle have it like you mentioned but there are tools we can use to stimulate that collagen. Dr. J: Yeah. That’s been one of the big things over the last 10 to 15 years in cosmetics is we now can stimulate our skin to produce new collagen our collagen normally peaks at around age twenty. So from a collagen stand point once we’re in our 20s we’re all downhill and one of the big thing is happening is our bodies just aren’t producing a lot of new collagen. So what we can do is bring in special tools that deliver we do mostly heat and in response to the heat. We damage some of the collagen that’s left that’s causes it to shrink and then our bodies lay down new collagen in response to that and that new collagen then shrinks. So we see a lot of skin tightening based on that. Host: I’ve had that Thermage before it’s a really amazing procedure but the before and after pictures really speak volumes. What are we taking out a look here? Dr. J: Well this is an abdomen and you can see just a remarkable difference in the way skin looks underneath the belly button they’re both before and after and this is after about six months.
