In the 1970s, Dayal spearheaded a monumental afforestation project, rehabilitating degraded coastal regions by planting indigenous species like mangroves and hardy tropical trees. These efforts not only stabilized the fragile coastal soil but also fostered biodiversity, turning lifeless land into thriving ecosystems. One of Dayal’s most revolutionary contributions to sustainable farming was the introduction of powdered oyster shells in the place of limestone powder. Farmers everywhere have been using lime stone powder to regulate soil pH. KV Dayal through his experiments found that a better alternative is powdered oyster shells. This regulates soil ph without destroying the soil ecology unlike limestone powder. By combining this with organic farming practices such as composting, crop rotation, and natural pest control, he demonstrated how productivity could be achieved in harmony with nature. Widely respected as a visionary, Dayal’s contributions to Alappuzha have had lasting impacts.
