DORODI (দরদী) । The Instrument | Introduction | Premangshu

"দরদী" (দোতারা + সরোদ + ইচ্ছে ) Presenting the DORODI, a string instrument, conceptualised and designed for the first time by Premangshu Das, and expertly crafted by the eminent Sarod maker, Shri Naba Kumar Kanji. The name of this instrument derives from the three Bengali words, দোতারা (Dotara),সরোদ (Sarod),and ইচ্ছে (Wish). The instrument itself combines more than just the names and structures of the Dotara and the Sarod. In fact, the DORODI brings together the sweet, earthy notes of the Dotara, and the deep, introspective sound of the Sarod, in mellifluous harmony. The DORODI is a fretless instrument with four playing strings, four 'Jawari' strings, two 'Chikaris' and seven sympathetic strings. It can be played in the traditional Dotara style, as well as the sliding 'Meer' playing style of the Sarod.
