I won’t lie to a patient.

Some families ask me not to say the word hospice. Some ask me not to talk about death. Some ask me to “keep it positive.” And I understand the fear behind that request. I really do. But I will not lie to a patient to make everyone else more comfortable. In this video, I talk about what happens when families ask me to avoid the truth — and why honesty, done gently and compassionately, is one of the greatest acts of love we can offer at the end of life. As a hospice chaplain, my role is not to rush death. It’s not to crush hope. And it’s definitely not to collude with denial. It’s to create space where truth and tenderness can coexist. We can be kind without being deceptive. We can protect dignity without hiding reality. We can love people enough to let them know where they are.
