“But let me tell you that Big Brother Apartheid might be dead but his father is still with us. We never killed his father. His father’s name is the class system and his job is gentrification. In the name of gentrification, the father of Apartheid is still chasing poor black people from District Six. […] He is coming for us. He came for us last week on his first round through Woodstock. He chased us around the corner” - Leigh Davids, 2018. Even though DA’s values found in their 2014 Election Manifesto include opposing Apartheid and the want to overcome the “legacy of Apartheid”, as Davids explained, the legacy of Apartheid is still alive and thriving today through the displaced former residents of District 6 as well as reinventing itself as gentrification, found in Woodstock. This is 5 minute documentary about Dureeya Bassier, a former resident of District 6. Dureeya reflects on her childhood, growing up in the vibrant, multiracial and multicultural neighbourhood, Apartheid, being forcibly removed, gentrification, and life after District 6.
