Dr. Steve Knighton goes over the anatomy of Sinus Tarsi Syndrome and how it relates to chronic ankle sprains. If you've ever noticed a permanent swollen bump on the outside of your ankle, you’re not alone, this is something we see all the time in the clinic. Many patients suffer from persistent pain, stiffness, and instability long after their initial sprain, often due to damage in the sinus tarsi, a small cavity between the talus and calcaneus bones that houses crucial ligaments, nerves, and blood vessels. When an ankle sprain occurs, particularly with excessive inversion (rolling the ankle outward), the ligaments in the sinus tarsi can be overstretched or torn. Over time, repeated injuries can lead to Sinus Tarsi Syndrome, causing chronic pain, swelling, and poor ankle stability. Without proper treatment, scar tissue buildup and ongoing inflammation can make it difficult for the ankle to heal properly, leaving individuals prone to reinjury. At our Oakville chiropractic clinic, we see these cases frequently and use a combination of manual therapy, shockwave therapy, soft tissue release, and stability exercises to help patients recover. If your ankle always feels swollen or weak after an old sprain, it's time to address the underlying anatomical issues so you can move pain-free again.
