On March 14, 1775, a land speculator, Richard Henderson, from North Carolina and Cherokee representatives met at Sycamore Shoals (present-day Elizabethton, Tennessee) to discuss the purchase of a tract of land known as the Transylvania Purchase. Henderson aimed to establish a fourteenth colony covering Kentucky and Middle Tennessee. The purchase was not without its share of difficulties. The Cherokee was competing for the claim of the land, and there was no guarantee of British recognition for a fourteenth colony. After days of negotiation, the Cherokee yielded to Henderson’s wish to purchase the twenty million acres in exchange for valued goods and money. Henderson quickly moved forward with his plans for the land, building roads to settlements and establishing a system of government under the authority of the Transylvania Purchase.
