I occasionally get questions about how to start smoking a pipe. In this video I explain a few basics, how to avoid spending too much money when getting started, how to avoid the dreaded "tongue bite," and a history of my own horrible attempts to start pipe smoking. You might want to start with a corncob pipe. These pipes are inexpensive, are not fussy and smoke well. Be sure to buy a quality pipe with a hardwood insert at the bottom of the bowl. The Missouri Meerschaum corncob pipes are excellent. You will want to graduate to a briar pipe later on. Briar pipes smoke beautifully, but require a bit of extra care, including the gradual creation of a "cake," a carbon layer lining the bowl. Start with a non - aromatic tobacco. American style aromatics are usually topped or dressed with a sweet syrup to add flavors. Many over- the- counter (OTC) tobaccos, also called "drugstore blends" like Captain Black or Borkum Riff also are topped with propylene glycol to keep the tobacco moist on the shelf. Remember, PG is one of the ingredients used in making e-liquid/vape juice; it is supposed to create steam, which is not desirable in pipe smoke. Try an untopped burley blend for your first tobacco; a good tobacconist or online retailer will happily recommend a good starter tobacco for you. Don't inhale the smoke. It is not necessary and in fact is hazardous to lung health. Buy an inexpensive pipe tool and pipe cleaners when you get your pipe; you'll need them.
