Day 11 - Camino Frances - Navarrete to Azofra

Camino de Santiago - The Frances Day 11 (13th of May) Navarrete to Azofra - 23km We were up with the sparrows 😳 (not really a Jenny thing). We had to leave early to be at our accommodation before 3pm otherwise they allocate your semi-reserved bed to walk-in pilgrims. It was our coldest day so far, 8°C and wind, felt a lot colder - we only really warmed up after 16km when we reached the first town, Nájera. I think the hot cup of coffee helped 😊. In hindsight, we should have taken the alternative Camino route after 8km which takes you through the town of Ventosa. Many pilgrims took that route and found hot coffee on the way. This route was 1km further to walk. Looking back it would have been nice to have that coffee with our sandwiches as it was so cold. Luckily we had some pre-made sandwiches which we ate earlier in the walk. As we walked out of the coffee shop in Nájera someone shouted “another kiwi” (she spotted the badge on the backpack)- it was so nice to meet someone else from New Zealand. We ran into them again when checking into our accommodation. We also met a lady who is doing her pilgrimage with her dog, really amazing. She had to pre-book all accommodation as not many places allow dogs. She is from a town near Barcelona. Most of the route today was on a slight incline, mostly through wine vineyards - there was even some wine tasting 😂. We can feel that we are getting fitter, we did the walk in less than 7 hours, including all breaks. Hopefully we will have our “Camino legs” soon 🚶🏻‍♀️😄. Jo’s leg gave her lots of grieve today and needed resting quite often. Some stretches were suggested which have helped in addition to having more regular one-minute sit down breaks. And of course the continuing saga of blisters now on both feet for Jenny - a redressing was required just after our sandwich break. We arrived in Azofra just after 1.30pm. Our accommodation for tonight is in a Municipal Albergue, they have 30 rooms with two beds per room. Hopefully we won’t be too cold tonight 🥶, the bathroom is a shared facility for both men and women - and the showers have swing doors that don’t lock 😳.
