Exploring SEQ's most rugged mountain - the infamous Mt Lindesay. Is it worth the risk to summit this mountain? Today we'll explore from the southern tier, around the western side, and down the north-west ridgeline. And I'll show you the Yowie Cave. Here's the link: https://ko-fi.com/jelbuilder **************************** Check out @t-rocks1960 video on the geology of this amazing "agglomeration of volcanic garbage!": • The 1500m Pile of Geology that is Mt Lindesay **************************** My access to the mountain was via the border fencing which veered around to the south. It is like a 45 degree incline up the slopes to the base of the clouds and you will be climbing up on all fours via ground roots and whatever you can grab. Once you come to the southern side of the first tier, directly in front of you is the Gully route to access this Rock. Once you start ascending, there is a climbing rope... but this still is a treacherous route up unless you are an experienced climber with a head for heights. I probably got up about 40m (then realised I wasn't Bert Salmon who could scale this rock like a mountain goat) and that I still wanted to go home alive and live a little bit longer. So, down I went. At the base again of tier 1, to the east there is a nice little cave... undoubtedly sheltering the reported resident Yowie. I continued eastward for a few hundred metres to find there was no real route to ascend the mountain, and the bush was thick and way too overgrown. I did give it a shot though. I decided to backtrack and went past the Gully rope access point of tier 1 and clambered on the western side. Very thick growth and extremely rough terrain, with serious bush bashing through scrub. Sheer vertical rock wall of tier 1, nil access points seen. Got to the Western ridge line and then descended down via extremely rough foliage and terrain until circuited back close to the start point. Let me stress that this is dense and rough country here with numerous Lantana and Gympie Gympie plants... one slide of its leaves over your exposed skin, and it will sting and burn for the rest of your day... Don't ask me how I know. Nil snakes seen today most likely due to being winter. Bummed I wasn't able to summit this mountain from my route, and I have great respect for those that have. Particularly the first females who summitted this 1177m high mountain, Jean Easton and Nora Dimes, who made the ascent with Bert Salmon in March 1931. If you have ever seen photos of their climb, it appears they had minimal gear. Simply amazing especially considering it was a wet day when they did it. Final words to anyone considering climbing up this Rock, unless you are an experienced climber.... this is NOT a mountain for "hiking" such as the easy Mt Barney. Great respect to Mt Lindesay and to the elusive Yowie that lives in these parts who is rumored to scale this rock daily with nil gear. #yowie #adventure #exploration
