Mentawai Islands Shoulder-Season Dec, 2023 l Jan, 2024 Q: When is the Most Uncrowded Time to Visit the Mentawai? A: We get this question every week at Kandui Resort and hands down Dec and Jan are the 2 months with the least amount of surfers in the Mentawai. Most resorts and charter boats close for these 2 months and most sessions are just with Kandui Resort guests. Q: What Type of Waves Does Dec and Jan Have? A: We get this questions virtually every day and our Shoulder-Season (Nov-Feb) has had the biggest misconception for years, flat surf, onshore winds and not the time to visit the Mentawai. While you do not see the large In-Season (Mar-Oct) swells, what you do see is fun size surf daily (shoulder high to overhead), mostly rights and substantially less people. Q: Do You Have More Rain During Dec and Jan? A: We get this question virtually every week as well and while you do see more rain than In-Season, the Mentawai is located 180 miles south of the equator and removed from the normal weather pattern for Indonesia. You will see more rain but since we're located virtually on the equator, it's not much different than the rest of the year.
