Christian theology is fundamentally defined as the study or science of God. Since the God of Christianity is active, this definition expands to include God’s works, creation, humanity, and redemptive work. Theology is regarded as a second-level activity, serving as reflection upon the primary level of lived religion, which involves doctrine, feeling, and practice. The central task of Christian theology is examining, interpreting, and organizing the teachings of Christ to provide a Christian understanding of reality. Within the narrower sense of doctrinal study, Christian theology encompasses four disciplines: biblical, historical, philosophical, and systematic theology. Systematic theology synthesizes the findings of the others to produce a coherent statement of Christian doctrines. For this discipline to be complete, it must possess five facets: it must be biblical, drawing primarily on the canonical Scriptures as its content source; systematic, relating all portions of the Bible to form a harmonious whole; related to general culture, contextualizing its views against other disciplines like cosmology or psychology; contemporary, using modern idioms to address current questions; and practical, relating to issues of life and ministry, recognizing that the practical effect is a consequence of the doctrine’s truth. Systematic theology is dependent on biblical theology for its raw material. It utilizes historical theology—organized by synchronic (given time/theologian) or diachronic (history of doctrines) approaches—to become self-critical, learn construction models, and evaluate ideas by observing historical outcomes. Philosophical theology is utilized to scrutinize terms, criticize arguments, and justify truth claims. The discipline faces fundamental epistemological challenges, such as the dilemma of whether to begin with the doctrine of God or the doctrine of revelation (Scripture). Historically, thinkers differed on methodology: Thomas Aquinas sought to prove God’s existence via pure reason and five proofs, viewing theology as the queen of the sciences, whereas Karl Barth vigorously rejected natural theology, preferring to start with the doctrine of the Word of God. The concept of religion itself has shifted from belief/dogma (Middle Ages) to feeling (Schleiermacher), especially following Immanuel Kant's philosophical work which restricted religion to ethics and practical reason.
