Khadi cloth from Vavilala Khadi Gramodyog Samthan is one of the oldest Khadi Cooperative. This was established in 1924, by Swamy Ramananda Teertha. Shri PV Narasimha Rao (Previous Prime Minister of India) was the Chairman of this organization. The cotton is cultivated by using desi varieties of seeds and by following organic farming practices. The entire production of cloth (from seed to cloth) is natural and eco-friendly. The cloth is woven by hand. No machine is used. Natural colors are used for dying. Currently cotton cloths are produced by using cotton which is cultivated with genetically modified seeds and following chemicals. Machines are also used to weave the cloth. However, Vaavilala Cooperative uses cotton that is cultivated with desi seeds and organic methods. Cloth is also handmade. This is cloth is part of freedom struggle of India. The first Indian flag that was hoisted on 15th Aug 1947 was made at Vaavilala by using cotton threads of 33 count in three colors and the Ashoka Chakra was hand printed.
