CBS Evening News Closing themes 1987-PRESENT

Updated version of the previous videos CBS Evening News Closing themes throughout the years. The video has been re-uploaded since the newscast switched back to the Patterson, Walz & Fox theme (in use 1991-2006) after Tony Dokoupil took over as anchor on January 5, 2026. Plus, drone footage of cities where the broadcast was and is made. CBS Evening News' 1987 theme marked the first time the program used an orchestral composition, breaking a policy prohibiting music use in the early days of television news. CBS initially used a simple ticker sound for opening, bumper, and closing, but as ratings declined and NBC's Nightly News theme gained popularity, CBS commissioned composers to create a new theme. The current theme was retired in 2006 after Katie Couric became an anchor and the broadcast got a makeover. CBS News (a division of Paramount Global) holds all rights for music pieces used.
