Amber and I are preparing for an incredible adventure — a 500-mile canoe trip down the Upper Mississippi River starting at the headwaters at Lake Itasca and paddling all the way to Ford Lock in Minneapolis. In this video we take our first canoe trip of 2026 as we begin testing our setup for the journey ahead. We recently picked up a 17-foot flat-back canoe, and today we're taking it out on the river to see how our gear works, try the motor setup, and start dialing things in for the big trip. This upcoming expedition will follow the Mississippi River State Water Trail, where we'll be camping, fishing, paddling, and occasionally motoring through one of the most beautiful and rugged stretches of the river. We're not expert paddlers, and this trip will definitely push us outside our comfort zone — but that's part of the adventure! We'll be sharing the entire journey with you as we prepare for the trip and eventually paddle the full 500 miles. Along the way in this video you'll see: • Our first canoe ride of the season • Testing a small motor on the canoe • Trying out a shade canopy and gear setup • Planning the 500-mile Mississippi River canoe trip • Winter river conditions and wildlife • Our dog Nova joining the adventure This trip could take 3–4 weeks, and we're learning as we go. If you have gear suggestions or tips for long canoe expeditions, drop them in the comments — we'd love to hear from experienced paddlers. 👍 Please Like, Subscribe, and follow along as we prepare for one of the biggest adventures we've ever attempted. #MississippiRiver #CanoeTrip #RiverAdventure #CanoeCamping #LakeItasca #OutdoorAdventure #MississippiRiverTrail 00:00 Introduction to our trip 01:22 Why we picked this Osagian canoe 02:56 Prepping the destination 03:40 Made it to the river 05:00 Backing into the water 07:09 We're screwed! 12:20 Entering the shallow entrance to chute. 14:47 Shade for the dog and motor 16:40 Our reason for using the motor 17:35 We need your help 18:49 Conclusion
